As the Android community grows, the spreading of various malware is as good as inevitable. Recently, a group of developers were arrested after being associated with the SMS Trojan known as Foncy, which targeted Android users from Europe and Canada. The said criminals have been imprisoned and indicted in France, and since then the app has been proclaimed as good as dead.
Recently however, a new Trojan has hit French Android users, and according to experts from Kaspersky Labs, the said SMS Trojan is related to Foncy.
The sad SMS Trojan dubbed “Mania” came out about a month before the authors behind Foncy were indicted. At present, “mania” only targets French Android users. Apparently, the Trojan has spread via file sharing sites, and is disguised as some other popular Android app such as Kaspersky Mobile Security, PhoneLocator Pro, and CoPilot Live Europe.
Once the fake app is launched, “Mania” immediately sends an SMS to a French premium rate number, and during this process, the Trojan smartly pretends to be a real app and performs some license checking.
